PET/CT is a diagnostic tool that combines two different imaging modalities into one single scan. PET is an acronym for Positron Emission Tomography, also know as PET scan. PET utilizes a special camera and a special radioactive sugar to produce pictures of the function and metabolic activty of cells within the body.
CT stands for Computer Tomography. A CT scan ustilizes X-rays to create detailed images of internal structures with in the body. CT scans can detail the size , shape and location of abnormalities but can difficult to distinquishing bening from malignant tissue.
Together PET/CT creates a 3-demensional image which allows the physican see the detailed anatomical structure of the body, while at the same time view the metabolic function of cells. PET alone is more sensitive than CT but does not provide the detail of anatomy as CT. Therefore by combineing the two modalities PET/CT can pinpoint the exact location of abnormality even before it is seen on CT alone. To learn more about PET/CT please click here.
